September update

Hi!

An update. Most of the plants are still out on the balcony. Temperatures are almost summer-like.

Here is the classic - Chile de arbol.

This one is new for me. Yellow chicken heart. It's really hotter than I expected.

The good old rocopica. A cross between Capsicum cardenasii and pubescens.

The bode roxa is a beauty. I will try to keep it inside for the winter.

Aji chinchi amarillo. Haven't tasted this one yet. The shape is different, and I'm sure it's a good one :-) Since it's a baccatum.

Pimenta cambuci. Mild, with a nice taste.

I don't know the name of this one. I call it CA1, being a Capsicum annuum. No heat. Like a bell pepper.

This is a type of aji amarillo, but since I lost the name of it, I call it CB1.

Mareka fana (berbere). Haven't tasted it yet. I don't expect it to be so hot. But I have misjudged the heat before.

Roumanian gallo. A peperoncino. Not very hot. It had a rough start with spider mites, but has somewhat recovered.

This is another noname. I call it CA2. The plant reminds me of goatsweed, but the pods are more like serranos. Here is the flower. Capsicum annuum.

My old malagueta. I like the way the flowers come in clusters.

CB1. Beautiful shape. That "typical" pepper shape.

 The yellow chicken heart with plenty of pods.

Malagueta flowers. Capsicum frutescens. A great plant. I guess it likes it a little warmer than here in Stockholm, but it's doing fine.

Another CB1. Nice shape.

And last, but not least, my favorite - dedo de moca.

An update - 4 varieties

Time for a small update.

CAP 1153, one of my favorite Capsicum chacoense

 It doesn't look too good. But I hope there will be some pods, so I can save the seeds.

CA1

I've lost the name of this one. It's a really big fruit. 20cm and heavy weight. I expect it to taste like a bell pepper or similar.

Malagueta

OK, now we're having a heat wave, in the end of July. But this one has had a really rough start of the season. Hoping for at least some pods.

Chile de arbol

It's funny. This one is a classic variety, but I've never grown it before. I like the shape of it. The flowers are pretty, typical annuum.

Always exciting to see the progress. I was really surprised this morning to see that six varieties have germinated.

First out this year is:

• serrano (C. annuum)
• malagueta (C. frutescens)
• pimenta cambuçi (C. baccatum)
• chile de arbol (C. annuum)
• aji chinchi amarillo (C. baccatum)
• mareka fana (C. annuum)

It's only six days since I planted the seeds. I need to check my notes from previous years, but I think the the malagueta usually isn't that fast.

Maybe it's because 2016 is going to be a great chile pepper year :-)

Malagueta (middle size)

Hi!

End of August, and I'm starting to think about the next steps for my plants. It won't get any warmer this year, and if I want to keep some over the winter, I need to move them indoors really soon.

This one is weird. The seeds that I used were over 10 years old, so I didn't have any expectations really. But the plant looked OK, and it produced flowers. The flowers were pollinated, but the pods never started to grow.

Here is a closer look.You can clearly see that the flowers have dropped, and that there is like a small fruit there. Just that it doesn't grow.

I realize I grew it in 2002, and it didn't produce any pods then. So the seeds are probably from 2001.

I've never seen anything like this. I think the explanation is that the seeds were old. But it would be interesting to hear about your experiences.

Looking good, so far

Hi!

It's starting to "move" on the balcony. Some peppers are getting ready, and some are getting started.

Here are some samples.

Habanero red

A typical habanero. I like the way they are turning red. Shifting from green, over a kind of yellow, and then red.

And this one is really bright red.

CGN 21500 

 This one is new for me. Thank you Jukka! The pods grow two and two, almost like cherries. Dark purple, almost hard to catch on a picture.

Trepadeiro Werner

This one is also new for me. Once again, thanks to Jukka! I can't get a picture of the plant, since it's all over the place. Trepadeiro means climbing (or something like that), and I fully agree. It climbs on all the other plants. Beautiful small pods.

Dedo de moça

My old brazilian classic. A true favorite.

Malagueta

This one is a malagueta that I got on the market in Salvador 15 years ago. I've never succeeded to grow it, so the seeds are old. But it looks promising. The size of the pods is bigger than an ordinary malagueta. I really hope that it produces some pods.

And this is my over-wintered "ordinary" malagueta. It's really fiery. Instant heat :-)

Wild Brasil

A new variety for me. Typical chinense. The flowers are in clusters of six. It looks really interesting.

Look at this amazing cluster of flowers.

Habanero yellow

 Of all habaneros, I think that the yellow ones usually are the best. Hope that this is true for this one too.

The first ones moving out

Hi!

Today I decided to move some of the peppers outside. I chose the overwintered varieties. It's always a thriller and kind of a big moment to move them out. The weather is not so predictable, but I think they will be OK.

Here you see a tepin to the left, a malagueta in the middle, and a rocoto to the right. The rocoto doesn't really show, but it's there. The malagueta is full with flowers, and some pods. Some mature, and some new ones.

And here is an overwintered Brazilian chinense. It has flowers too, and maybe it will be too cold for it at night, but I give it a try...

And here is a happy me, enjoying the sunshine :-)

Malagueta

Hi!

Another one from Brazil!

This plant is from seeds that I got in Brazil last year. The pods were really, really tiny. A couple of millimeters, so I thought that something was wrong. Now I can see that these pods are not bigger.

So it's the smallest malagueta I have grown.

The flowers are typical frutescens.

And, here is the tiny pod. Maybe a half centimeter.

The plant is very nice looking. The leaves are (sort of) greener than my other plants.

I hope it has the time to produce some nice pods. The nights are getting cooler, but I expect them to be able to stay out on the balcony for another month.

Malagueta

I realize that I'm not completely trustworthy when I say "THIS IS MY FAVORITE"....

But malagueta is really one of my favorites.

The taste is great. It's good dried. It's good in olive oil.

And I think it's a beauty. Loot at the long stem on this picture!

And here. I think that it indicates a philosophy or opinion. Something like "I don't care what you think, I'm doing what I feel like :-)"

I brought these malaguetas from Brazil, so I didn't grow them this year. But maybe I will grow the seeds from them in 2014. Who knows. I haven't decided yet.

Pickled malaguetas

My malaguetas didn't make it this season. But we found this nice bottle the other day.

The malagueta taste is great, and they mix perfectly well with the vinegar.
