Capsicum cardenasii (again)

Say hello to Mr. Cardenasii with one green and one red eye :-) Seriously, when I went to take a look at the plant, I felt someone staring at me...

Finally the fruits are turning red.

So I decided to pick one. Because I have wanted to taste a cardenasii for years. And this is the first time I have got mature fruits.

The heat was good, and I think the taste was fine.

I'm thinking about which varieties I will keep for the winter and next year. And I believe that this is one that I want to keep!

Capsicum cardenasii

They are not easy to see, but this year, I have finally managed to get a Capsicum cardenasii with lots and lots of fruits. Nice! Can't wait for them to turn red and to taste them.

Capsicum cardenasii

Cardenasii is believed to be the mother of all Capsicum, so it is special to me. It originates from Bolivia and Peru, and sometimes goes under the name Ulupica.

I can not remember the last time when my cardenasii produced pods. But this year it has been flowering a lot, and actually produced a couple of tiny pods. The pods are less than a centimeter in size.

I can't wait for tasting the pods when they are ripe! :-)

I have tried to grow this species from different seed sources during the years, but I have never really managed to get it to enjoy it on my balcony. Hoping for the best this year.

The flowers don't look like other cardenasii that I have grown, but I think they are beautiful anyway!

Another name for Capsicum cardenasii is ulupica, and it is believed to be the 'mother' of all Capsicum. That leads me to show a flower picture of one of my other varieties that I grow this year.

Rocopica
Rocopica is a cross between a rocoto (Capsicum pubescens) and cardenasii. Also with purple flowers.



This plant is from seeds that I started in 2008, so I have kept it for some years. It seems to enjoy the Stockholm climate a lot, because last year it produced lots and lots of fruits. And it seems to like it even this year. So that's nice :-) Here is a picture from last year. The fruits are very hot, with an intense heat.
