Sunday part II - an update

Phew. Things are looking better now.

The tallest one in the background (window) is the Trepadeiro Werner. It's suppost to grow tall, I guess, judging by the name. It's almost 60 cm tall now. And in front of that one, is the Peru yellow. Almost as tall.

In the kitchen, the plants are not as tall. In the lower right corner it's one of my favorite herbs - ashwagandha.

And here are the gang of four that still is waiting for their final pots... Right now I'm out of pots, so they have to wait for a while :-)

Ashwagandha "harvest"

It's funny. I have looked at the fruits on my ashwagandha, but I didn't think they contained any seeds or berries. They look like physalis and tomatillo, hiding the fruits inside.

Today I felt adventurous and picked the pods that looked ripe and opened them. And I was surprised to find small red fruits inside.

I wonder if they are edible, and/or what they are good for. Anyone who knows?

Update:
Now I know. Don't eat the fruits. The seeds have some poisonous properties. Seeds and flowers are used in some medicinal preparation as diuretic and to
coagulate milk. Mostly the roots and leaves are used in ayurvedic medicine. Roots are dried and powdered.

Ashwagandha update

It's an interesting plant. The pods, which I suspect contain seeds are growing and growing.

I'm curious what will come out of this :-)

Ashwagandha flowers

Ok, this is not a Capsicum, it's a Withania somnifera but I am happy to see that my ashwagandha is flowering!

Ashwagandha is also known as Indian ginseng, and its roots are commonly used in ayurveda.

Tonight, the weather forecast again predicts temperature below 10C. I believe that the plants out on the balcony are going to get cold feet...
